Things To Do In City Museum – Visit Missouri

Should you find yourself within a couple of hours of St. Louis, Missouri, you should budget out a day or three to visit the City Museum. This 10-story building features a multi-dimensional experience of art, play, exhibitions, and exploration. With 600,000 square feet of total sensory discovery, this museum would take weeks to exhaust fully. My friend Jacob Mills from, had the most wonderful experience when he visited The City Museum and shared so many stories about their culture with me.

Some of the museum’s highlights include its Toddler Town Castle, Aquarium, MonstroCity, Enchanted Caves, the Pipe Organ, countless exhibits, and multi-story slide. This museum is a kinesthetic experience that speaks to every age demographic. Younger visitors can explore the tunnels, secret passages, and caves interwoven throughout several of the main floors. Every nook and cranny is covered with the artistic expression of a variety of found objects. There is no place that the eye can land on that won’t be delighted with one element of creativity or another.

While some areas are more playground than exhibit, all areas are very accessible and welcoming.  The museum offers a variety of elevators, staircases, tunnels, and slides. Seating is available in every area for those who may want to sit back and just take in the sights. This museum offers a very relaxed approach to engaging with the art.

The City Museum does a fantastic job of keeping exhibits new and exciting. There is almost always a specialty exhibit featured, so check the calendar of upcoming exhibits to plan for an optimum experience.

If you’re planning to enjoy a day at this museum, there are a couple of tips that can add to the experience.  First, if you’re limber enough to climb through and among the tunnels, chutes, and passageways, you might want to bring a set of knee pads. There are places that you can only access by crawling and spelunking. Likewise, as some areas are too compacted to receive good lighting, consider bringing a headlamp as well.  The Gift Shop on the premises will have a supply available for purchase, should you need it.

Every floor offers an opportunity for food and drink as eclectic as the museum itself. Enjoy the flavors of dining in a log cabin, the atmosphere of speak-easy, or enjoy dining on the romantic Rooftop of the 11th floor—each eatery offers a unique menu to choose from.

While the museum is typically open seven days per week, the Rooftop is only available from mid-March through November. Access to the Rooftop is an additional charge. Tickets range from $16 to $30, and visitors should make reservations. Walk-ups may be disappointed due to the popularity of this attraction.
